Firework Safety Tips

If you are planning on using fireworks for your Memorial Day celebration, take the time to review these safety tips!

  • Check your local laws and regulations about fireworks and abide by all of them

  • Report any type of illegal explosives to your local police or fire department

  • Read ALL labels, instructions and warnings before using any firework

  • Children should never be allowed to use fireworks

  • Prior to use, store any fireworks in a place not accessible to children

  • A responsible adult should always supervise any type of firework activity

  • The responsible adults in charge of supervision and lighting fireworks should NEVER be under the influence of any alcohol when doing so

  • Always wear safety glasses when using fireworks

  • Never light more than one firework at a time and move away as quickly as possible once lit

  • Fireworks should only be used outdoors

  • Find a clear area away from any buildings, vehicles, structures, forest or foliage

  • A bucket of water or hose should always be nearby the location that fireworks will be used and must be easily accessible

  • Never experiment with homemade fireworks

  • Never shoot fireworks into glass or metal containers

  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or on your person

  • If a firework does not work after a first attempt to light it (aka a "dud" firework) never attempt to light it again, after leaving it alone for a minimum of 20 minutes, then soak it in water

  • When you are done with fireworks, wet them down and place them in a metal container and away from anything combustible before disposing of them the next day

Fireworks & Pets

  • You should not bring pets to any sized firework show

  • When fireworks are happening near your home, do everything to can to limit what they can hear (put them inside, keep them in an interior room, play music or white noise to reduce the sound of fireworks)

  • If fireworks are happening nearby, be sure your pet is wearing its identification tags in the event that they run away

  • Never shoot off any kind of fireworks with pets nearby
