Spring Cleaning Safety Checklist

If you're ready to get started with your spring cleaning, add these items to your checklist to protect you and your family from the most common home risks!

  • Repair and damaged or loose siding

  • Have gutters cleaned

  • Have your heating and cooling systems serviced

  • Install surge protectors to prevent damage to electronics and appliances in the event of a lightning strike or power surge

  • Inspect swimming pools and outdoor play equipment to ensure their safety features are in tact

  • Remove clutter from storage areas to reduce fire hazards

  • Ensure that flammable materials or liquids are several feet from furnaces and water heaters

  • Check railings on any decks, porches and balconies to make sure they are secure

  • Keep working fire extinguishers in the kitchen and garage of your home and be sure that everyone in the home knows how to use them in the event of an emergency

  • If your garage door(s) do not have sensors on them, install them, the reversing mechanism could save a person or a pet. If your garage door already has sensors, check to make sure they are working properly

  • Set the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees or lower to prevent scalding injuries

  • Electrical outlets should be protected with ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) if they are located near a water source

  • Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • If you have small children in your home, install child proof latches on all windows that are less than two feet about the floor and all windows on upper stories (Any window glass located less than 18 inches off the floor should be rated as safety glass)
